Our Student Participants

NCJEF formally launched in 2005 to promote the expansion and diversification of North Carolinians studying Japanese and pursuing careers in STEM-related fields. The goal is to bridge the gap between cultures, strengthen the bilateral economic and strategic relationship, and enhance global stability.

What better way to learn the Japanese language than to eat, sleep, and breathe in Japan? This modern country is filled with wonderful contrasts — its dignified temples and shrines stand quietly in the shadows of massive skyscrapers. Japan's modernity and fast pace are balanced by the serene charm of its many parks and the quiet courtesy of its people. Both energetic and graceful, your tour of Tokyo, Nagoya, and Sapporo will be a gateway to the fascinating culture of Japan.

NCJEF conducts programs for students who are excited to make exceptional strides in their Japanese language skills. Every aspect of our programs supports Japanese language learning. The program is open to North Carolina high school students currently enrolled in any level of Japanese language classes, including AP.

Arriving in Japan

Experiencing an entirely new culture is at the heart of the NCJEF program. There is an orientation program prior to departing the U.S., and a NCJEF Program Director will be on hand to help students throughout the entirety of their stay. Part of making you feel at home in Japan is doing our best to make you feel safe and cared for. Whether it's the orientation program that prepares you for what's ahead, your housing that is well-located and comfortable, or the field trips that take you places to enrich your cultural and academic learning — we're all about our student services.

Homestays

NCJEF is dedicated to ensuring that you have the most authentic study abroad experience possible. The goal is that you understand and experience Japanese culture and society from a Japanese perspective. Part of this immersive experience is living with a Japanese host family. By participating in a homestay, you will gain a first-hand experience of Japanese customs, manners, and cuisine while you forge life-long friendships.

Academics

Our mission is simple: to provide you with the best study abroad program possible—which includes the highest quality academic and cultural experiences. Expand your speaking, reading, and writing abilities by immersing yourself in NCJEF’s specially designed Japanese language curriculum. The program course offerings include an intensive Japanese language course in partnership with Nagoya University and Nagoya University Affiliated High School. In addition, students will experience a variety of other courses including: Chemistry, Engineering, History, Literature, Political Science, International Business, Art History, and Biology.

Founded in 1871, Nagoya University is a world leader in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in International Studies. Our courses offer unique experiences that explore Japanese language, history, and culture through an in-depth and hands-on approach. World-class professors and course options enhance your academic experience and provide you with new perspectives each day in class.

Along with its cultural traditions, Nagoya is an important port city and industrial center. Major international businesses have a presence in Nagoya, including Toyota, Lexus, Mitsubishi Motors, Brother Industries, Boeing, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. You can easily apply what you study in the classroom when you explore popular local sites, such as the Atsuta Shrine and Nagoya Castle. Visit some of the city's many museums, like the Toyota Automobile Museums and Nagoya Museum of Fine Arts. Everything you do will be part of an unforgettable learning experience.

College Preparation

Students will have access to Nagoya University counselors to discuss returning to Japan to study abroad at the college level for one or two semesters. Additionally, students can meet with admissions staff of Nagoya University's G-30 International Undergraduate Degree program in which students can obtain a bachelor's degree in Japan.

Culture

Tea ceremony, calligraphy, music, dance, and martial arts - Japan is a medley of culture, old and new, that you can explore during the NCJEF program. In the past, students have learned how to play the Japanese harp (koto), make traditional Japanese sweets (wagashi), and practice kanji through Japanese calligraphy classes.

Sights and Sounds

NCJEF allows students to assist in planning their Japanese experiences and that includes visiting locations of personal interest. Past trips have included tours of Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Kyoto, Sapporo, Otaru, and Furano.

Program Dates and Costs

Our international programs occur annually in July. NCJEF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to making travel to Japan as inexpensive and inclusive as possible. Payment plans and scholarships are available to students. Please contact us for additional information.
